Finally, a Computer Program for a Rod Building Professional!

When I started building custom rods in 1996 it all started out very simple. I made a few rods for myself and they turned out very good after the first few tries. As I got better I had friends that wanted me to made them a rod. So I ordered the parts, built the rod, and sold it to them. I really didn't worry about making money.

So let's fast forward a little. More people were asking me to make them rods and since I enjoyed it was no problem. I realized I could make some extra money and started making rods. Does this sound familiar? I had started my Rod Building business!

Very soon the orders, and the tracking of who wanted what became a problem. When I made a rod someone fell in love with they would want another one just like it. I would go through notes and try to find what I had used and where I got it, what a pain. Being a computer programmer I looked for a Rod Building program to track everything so I wouldn't re-invent the wheel, so to speak.

Limited Options

My options were limited, spreadsheets, word documents, notepad and other software. None of these programs would do what I needed. There was no Rod Building software that I could find.

If you're not using computer software you probably have papers and notes everywhere. There's a printout from John's email and a Post-It on the changes he wanted. There's a piece of printer paper for the rod Crystal wanted, and another for Bill written on an the back of an old paper plate you had lunch on.

If you are using generic computer software you have a few choices. A hand written flat file database someone throws together to hold basic information. They are OK if you don't want history, fast lookups, cash tracking or anything else that would make your life easier. Maybe you're using a world famous invoicing software and entering in notes about the rods in the notes section. It's OK but it still misses the mark for Rod Builders by a mile.
